Let's Just Hope They Don't All End Up Like Steve And Barry's
-
This article is about the trend at shopping malls, which have come back from the dead in recent years, and the end of the traditional department store anchors in favor of mini-anchors. You used to have, like, Sears, JC Penney, and one or two regional department stores at the mall's ends. And if you had an upscale mall, you'd get Nordstrom, Saks, Bloomingdales, Neiman-Marcus. Now, you get a Macy's -- always a Macy's -- and old Sears buildings are being redone with a split format, so instead of a department store you get a Dick's Sporting Goods sharing the space with a Primark or Uniqlo or maybe a Dave and Buster's or some other restaurant. Turns out that you don't need the big, something-for-everyone stores to successfully anchor a mall, as long as you have a good selection of smaller stores people want. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
