Free Money Is Never Free

Voters in Switzerland just turned down a guaranteed $2,500 a month from a plan that would have given every citizen that amount, regardless of employment status or income. It would have replaced a wide range of social programs and welfare payments, but taxes would still have had to go up or other programs cut. This is not a cut-and-dried case of a government welfare program that conservatives or libertarians would hate; this is a redirection of the entire federal safety net, which already costs a lot, to a guaranteed income, which might spur spending and economic growth... or might lead a lot of people to just not work and thus kill productivity. If you knew you were going to make $30,000 a year without having to work, is it possible that you might just not work, period? (CNN Money)
