Barney Fife In A Bathing Suit
-
This is a profile of the head of the Avalon, NJ beach lifeguard squad, who's in his 61st season, but you can tell by the tone of the article and what even admirers say about him that he's... well, let's say that his primary thing is extremely strict enforcement of the city's beach badge rules; New Jersey beaches mostly charge admission, and you have to get seasonal or daily beach badges to even just sit on the beach. It's annoying, it's kind of ridiculous that the beach isn't free to all, and this guy's apparently a hard-ass about it. So is he worth celebrating? It's like honoring a hall monitor for years of making other students' lives that much more stressful. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
