To Each According To His Need... But Not Kale. He Doesn't Need Kale

We've been told a lot by the federal government about "food deserts," areas of poverty where no big groceries are located and where the locals don't eat enough fresh produce. So the government's spent $500 million to get groceries to open up in these places. That, you've seen reported. What hasn't been reported is that the program's been failing, because, it turns out, the reason people weren't eating vegetables and fruit in those areas wasn't because they couldn't get them, but rather because they don't like them, which means they're a lot like everyone else. A report notes the failure of the program and adds the observation that the original plan failed to take into account the fact that most people have access to, um, cars. And that means that they could always, if they wanted to, access markets with produce. They just didn't want to. And that $500 million's gone for good. (Reason)
