Hey, New York, your Mayor is hell-bent on spending $325 million -- and if you believe that's all it's gonna cost you, you are deluding yourself -- on ferries. Ferries? Yes, you're going to get a fleet of ferries to get you between the boroughs, and the Mayor insists it will cost the same fare as the subway and buses. If you think THAT'S going to go well, good luck. Is there a demand for a slow, choppy ride between Manhattan and Queens when you can hop a subway or cab or Uber or bus and get there already? It's not like the ferries to New Jersey, which help relieve traffic in the tunnels and are privately operated, or the Staten Island Ferry, which is a tourist thing and takes the place of a nonexistent roadway/bridge between S.I. and Manhattan. And San Francisco and Seattle have long-established systems that traverse water too far for bridges. New York, though... why ferries? (New York Times)
