Just In Time For Everyone To Want Only On-Demand Programming
-
Panicked over the prospect of the FCC allowing consumers to buy and use their own "open" set top boxes so they don't have to rent boxes from the cable or satellite companies, the industry is proposing an alternative: letting everyone use streaming apps to get cable content on any device. You'd still be paying for cable, but you'd be able to ditch the boxes and watch on your smart TV, your Roku, your phone, your tablet, your console. The FCC fears that this will mean the cable companies will insert commercials to monetize the programming, but so what? Even YouTube does that. Are you interested in buying cable without the box (or the cable, except to your router)? Or are you all about a la carte? (Los Angeles Times)
