Look, It's 33 Percent Cheaper Than A Price It's Never Been. Sold!

Amazon is tentatively, carefully testing out eliminating list price comparisons on its site -- no more showing a list price and a discount price, but rather just posting a single take-it-or-leave-it price -- and I predict they'll end up being back to posting list and discount prices. Why? Psychological: You KNOW that a lot of list prices are bogus and nobody ever pays them, but just seeing the "discount" makes you feel like the deal you're getting is reasonable even if you don't check other sites to see what the "real" price is. All in your head. (New York Times)
