This Kind Of Thing HAS To Be Avoidable

Look, I know, we've had centuries now in which trains going in opposite directions share tracks, but I still can't imagine why, in 2016, this is still the case. One missed switch and you end up with a tragedy like that which just happened in southern Italy, a crash in which at least 11 people were killed. You'd also think that in 2016, systems would be in place to warn operators that there were two trains sharing one track and heading directly at each other. We're almost at autonomous cars and we're still unable to prevent two speeding trains from slamming into each other head first? (BBC)
