When Rock And Roll Wasn't Dead Yet
-
This article posits that the most revolutionary year in rock history was 1966, and... well, "Revolver." "Pet Sounds." "Blonde on Blonde." "Freak Out." Love's debut. The Doors' debut. Even the Monkees' debut. That's plenty evidence, although you could make arguments for 1964 (British invasion), 1983 (Hip-hop takes hold), 1967 ("Sgt. Pepper," psychedelia)... and then there's 1996, which this article pegs for the death of alternative rock, buried in an avalanche of one-hit wonders and the onslaught of rap-rock. I'd say that alternative didn't die, it just changed focus and has changed again since then; I'd say indie rock is alternative rock with an alternative name. But you can argue about this all day.
