You don't need to be told how corrupt FIFA is -- it's become an international punch line. But in the latest probe of criminal bribery and corruption at soccer's international governing board, among the people being investigated for corruption over the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany is Franz Beckenbauer, and if you are not a soccer fan or don't know sports history before, say, 1990, he is a huge, legendary presence in the game, one of the world's best players - I got to see him play for the Cosmos with Pelé as both neared the end of their careers and he was still a regal presence on the pitch. So the idea that he was involved in something untoward is pretty monumental, and while you could blow it off with "you can't blame him because that's how things got done with FIFA," it's still a measure of how corrupt things have gotten on that level when someone like Der Kaiser is ensnared.
