There's Room For Everyone. Really, There Is
-
This avid bicyclist is campaigning to get drivers -- that's you, that is -- to use the "Dutch Reach" when exiting a car parallel-parked along the curb. What the F is a "Dutch Reach"? Simple: When opening your door, you use your right hand. That way, you're forced to turn around and you'd see a biker approaching, so you won't fling the door open and accidentally knock down the biker. The operative word is "accidentally," because I don't know what you're thinking, or what your problem is with bikers. Me, I use the side mirror and I always watch out for bikers, because there are so many around here and I sympathize with them, being a runner who's had to dodge flung-open doors myself. People don't look. (Boston Globe)
