Drink Milk, Eat Bread. Probably Won't Help, But That's What They SAY You Should Do

The story of the guy who ate a ghost pepper that burned a hole in his esophagus raises the question of why people eat really, really, REALLY hot food. It's not pleasurable, so why? Now, I say this as someone who USED to abhor spicy foods but now likes a little heat -- yes, I devoured some Nashville hot chicken, but I stuck with medium, which was plenty hot enough. Who orders the hottest version -- the kind that can send you to the hospital -- and enjoys it? Is eating the ultra-hot stuff just showing off? Or do you really prefer the heat? (The Washington Post)
