If you played sports as a kid, you surely had a preferred uniform number. I know you did, because everyone does. Maybe it was a favorite pro player's number, or a lucky number, but you had one. In college football these days, the hot thing is a single digit number, which has become a status symbol. Football is weird, though, since we always assign certain numbers to certain positions (it's the rule in the NFL, "recommended" in the NCAA) and anyone other than a quarterback or kicker or punter with a single digit looks... strange. Some teams make you earn that single digit. I wonder why it matters, but it does. (New York Times)
