May You Never Have To Meet Them... But It's A Good Thing They're Around If You Have To
-
This may or may not be a topic, but I'm including it here because it's fascinating to me. It's about what happens when you go abroad and get into trouble, whether it's with the law or, most commonly, you experience a health emergency. You might call the embassy, but the people who will really be assigned to help you are the "wardens," who are not diplomats at all. Instead, they're expat volunteers, Americans who now live in those places -- it could be China, it could be Chad -- and know the ropes, the language, where and how to get help. They're literally life-savers (or, in the case of Americans who die overseas, they're the people who'll help get the body back to the U.S.). (Washington Post)
