Holding Out For A Hero
-
If you're an NBA fan, you may have noticed that certain young, up-and-coming stars are getting more play in the media and among fans than usual, and this column suggests that it's part of the quest for "unicorns" in the league -- the next superstar, the next LBJ or Jordan. Being really good isn't enough; the player has to have something extra, indefinable, and it doesn't matter where the guy plays, either. So, there's a huge buzz around Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Greek Freak, and around Joel Embiid, The Process, and Kristaps Porzingis, and whoever else rises above (but not guys like Boogie Cousins or Paul George or Anthony Davis who may be franchise players but just don't have "it"). In two years, there may be others rotating into the "unicorn" position. Are we beyond team loyalty and statistics now? Are charisma and marketability paramount now? (New York Times)
