The Markeith Loyd case -- he's the guy who allegedly shot his pregnant ex-girlfriend dead and then murdered a cop during his attempted escape from justice -- is taking an interesting turn as Loyd represents himself in court (always a poor idea) and is apparently using the sovereign citizen defense, which is your topic. He said in court, “For the record, I want to state that I am Markeith Loyd, flesh and blood human being,” he said. “MARKEITH LOYD, in all capital letters, that’s not me. That’s a corporation that was created at my birth that I do not accept. That’s not me. Who would try that after so many stories providing evidence that it does not work in any court or anywhere, for that matter? It's like the people (many of the same people) who read something on the Internet and think that it proves they don't need to pay taxes. You'd think that they'd run into the "DON'T DO THIS" stuff when they're Googling "sovereign citizen." (WKMG-TV/Orlando)
