Not Drinking? Oh... So, What Step Are You On?
-
This column is by a guy who stopped drinking and how it makes friends and others uncomfortable in social situations. It's interesting, because I find the same thing. I don't drink much, and rarely in business or social situations -- occasional high-falutin' craft beer, maximum one, that's it -- for no particular reason, maybe calories but no great thought given to it, and I've found that people pressure me to have something alcoholic when I'm in a social situation. "Oh, come on," they say, "at least a beer." It's like I'm not considered adult unless I have an "adult beverage." The writer is abstaining because of depression, something he doesn't want to explain to people, and he's not in a program, which confuses people, too; I feel his discomfort. Why does society demand you drink? (Washington Post)
