Some newer video-enabled highway signs do this, but it's a good question: Why isn't there more and better information on highway signs, like distances on every directional sign, or drive times, or more specificity? Is it because people can't process too much information while driving? Is it too distracting? Or did they just not think of it? Because it would be nice to know more consistently how much time you have to change lanes. And in L.A., so many signs are so confusing, using places to denote direction ("10 EAST COVINA") that don't really tell most people if they're heading in the right direction.
