They Didn't Make Oakland Any Richer, That's For Sure
-
Well, the Oakland paper (the East Bay Times, successor to the Oakland Tribune) has weighed in on the Raiders' move to Vegas, and the editorial bears a headline that includes the essence of the attitude: Good riddance. The thing is, Oakland is broke. But even if it wasn't, spending what Vegas is spending in tax money to fund a new stadium is insanity. We have volumes of evidence that pro sports expenditures do NOT bring an adequate return to a market, that the revenue generated is merely displaced from what people would have spent on other entertainment and dining options, that few full-time jobs are created, that it's a waste of taxpayer money when the billionaires who own teams can afford to build their own stadium without the public funds. We know this already. But as long as there's a city desperate to call itself "major league," this will continue. (East Bay Times)
