I Wish You Would Step Back From That Ledge, My Friend

Here's an age-old story: Band struggles, band becomes big hit, singer gets big ego, unsung band members who wrote songs get booted. That's the case, roughly, with Third Eye Blind, which is now TWO bands, one with singer Stephan Jenkins, the original drummer, and some guys, and "XEB," with the founding guitarist and songwriter responsible for their hits, the original bassist, and the guitarist's replacement who now sings. Both are touring as a 20th anniversary thing for the band's first album, although the singer managed to get the trademark and is keeping the former bandmates from even mentioning Third Eye Blind in their marketing. This is a lot of sturm und drang over a fairly generic '90s band -- they, Matchbox 20, Semisonic, Soul Asylum, so many others, all pretty much the same -- but it's interesting in how success seems to always breed trouble. (The writer's fanboy love of the music is also pretty interesting....) (The Ringer)
