I don't know if this is standard operating procedure, but the Chicago Cubs have asked all the non-players who got World Series rings to agree not to sell them, and give the team the option to buy the rings back for $1 if the ring owner decides to sell anyway. On the one hand, I understand why the team would do that -- it's an honor, and they don't want people to be able to buy one on eBay. On the other hand, once you give someone something, isn't it theirs to do what they want with it? How about when they die and leave it to their heirs? Are the heirs bound to it? Can you treat this like a lease? (ESPN)
