Make Mine Chocolate Frosted With Sprinkles, Please

The first thing you should know is that here in L.A., most donut shops sell dozens in plain pink boxes, no labels, nothing but plain pink cardboard. Doesn't matter where you get 'em, you get a pink box. This article probes the important question of why L.A.-area donuts come in pink boxes. The answer? Well, the SECOND thing you should know is that while we DO have a few chains, most donut shops are independently owned, and they're owned by Cambodians. No, really, the Cambodian community developed sort of a network to help newcomers start businesses, and they just so happened to go with donuts, which quickly drove Dunkin' out of the market (they're back, in a limited way) and beat out Winchell's as the main source of donuts. And all that happened was that in order to shave costs, one of the shop owners asked for the cheapest boxes the supplier could make, and the supplier had leftover pink, and besides white is bad luck and red (close to pink) is good luck for Cambodians, so... pink boxes. NOW YOU KNOW. (Los Angeles Times)
