Right Or Wrong, The Real Lesson Is - Just Pay The Fare
-
The Minneapolis light rail is an honor system thing: You buy a ticket at a machine on the platform, and then you're supposed to show it to a conductor when there's a random check. I always buy a ticket but I've never been asked to show it, and you can assume a lot -- maybe most -- of the riders don't bother with tickets. But, occasionally, there's a check, and in one case, the transit cop decided to ask a farebeater if he was a citizen, a question he's not empowered to ask. It's on video. This has led to the farebeater facing deportation. The cop's no longer employed, but the farebeater's been scooped up by ICE, which moved in swiftly despite the transit police insisting they didn't inform ICE of anything. Regardless of your position on immigration, transit cops shouldn't be enforcing immigration laws. (New York Times)
