This is an entry in a series of articles about world-changing technology, and it makes a persuasive argument that air conditioning changed the world in ways you may not know. Some you might guess: A/C sped development of the Sun Belt and changed American demographics. But it also changed business: it was invented to help some industries remove the effects of humidity on production, like in printing and in some other businesses where rust was a factor in machinery effectiveness. The fact that it helped the workers survive terrible hot humid working conditions was incidental. Plus, we wouldn't have movie theaters in the summer, would we? Killed the drive-in, though. (BBC)
