But The Guy Will Have To Find Pants On His Own

Today's "Cop Does Something Nice For A Change" story involves a Toronto cop who caught an 18-year-old dude shoplifting clothes at a Walmart. The suspect said that he was taking the clothes because he had a job interview but no presentable clothes for it and he couldn't afford to buy them. So the cop bought him the shirt and tie. One way to consider this is as an example of how cops can, and should, use their discretion to treat each case as leniently as they see fit; he could have stuck to the letter of the law, but he saw that he could possibly help someone in need, and, besides, would an arrest have really done anything for anyone? It would just leave the kid with a criminal record. This is better. (Toronto Star)
