Sometimes, You Have To Just Look Away
-
So, Wednesday night at around dinner time, we watched a high-speed chase on TV that came close to where we live, and the guy was driving like a maniac, side-swiping other cars and driving on too-narrow shoulders, nearly flipping the car several times. He ended up in the Port of Los Angeles, trapped because he didn't know where he was, and then got out (with the car still moving) and climbed a very tall shipping crane where he proceeded to prance, sit, talk to himself, and gesture. It was clear he was either insane or on something. We stopped watching when coverage on broadcast ran out (time for the network news), but he kept going for hours on a narrow beam high in the sky, stripping naked and then finally falling to his death. But the question is: Once it was clear the guy was mentally ill or on drugs, should the TV coverage -- it continued online -- pull back? I mean, at that point, it's no longer entertainment and not really news anyone needs to see... (KABC-TV/Los Angeles)
