It's... Complicated
-
Bryn Mawr College is an all-female, very liberal institution, something I know a lot about since I went to its "brother" school and even lived on the BMC campus for a year. So it's interesting to see the school trying to deal with the fact that perhaps its most important president, M. Carey Thomas, a legendary suffragette whose name is on its most important building, was not only a proto-feminist icon but a racist and anti-Semite. They are now taking her name out of all references to Thomas Great Hall and Thomas Library on the school website and from printed materials. Should they take her name off the buildings, too? Putty over the engraved letters? (Philadelphia Inquirer)
