Call It Character Building. Or A Sweat Lodge, Either Way

Out in Fontana, CA, which gets very hot, they, like the rest of us in Southern California this week, are experiencing a heat wave. And when it's hot in Fontana, it's very, very hot. So when the school district informed parents that the schools might be shutting off the air conditioning at times to comply with power company restrictions, parents went ballistic. Yes, it's going to be intensely hot in those classrooms. But, you know, I grew up going to schools that didn't have a/c, and we went through heat waves (in New Jersey, with high humidity), and same for college in Pennsylvania, and somehow everyone survived. In fact, I was surprised to move out here and discover that EVERY school had a/c (and outdoor "hallways," which was also a new concept for me). So, I'm sympathetic, but also of the "why, in our day, we WALKED to school 20 MILES through TEN FEET OF SNOW" mindset. Don't listen to me. (KNBC-TV/Los Angeles)
