Can't Always Fake It Until You Make It
-
The accomplished and award-winning architect who turned out not to be a licensed architect is going to jail, and it's a weird story, because unlike the usual impostor stories, this guy was legitimately a good architect, in demand, and the crime was that he never took the exams and got a state license. Leaving aside why the state license is necessary -- they regulate the industry for safety reasons -- the big question, left mostly unanswered, is why he lied (he used someone else's license number and fake rubber stamps). He said he was busy coaching youth sports and just let it get away from him, but that's not really a clear answer. He didn't need to do that. He could have just taken the exams, followed the law, and he'd have been fine. What in someone's brain blocks them from doing the right thing? (New York Times)
