Whatever, It's Worth The Price

This article claims that in America, marriage is increasingly only for the wealthy and educated, because poor people can't afford it. They say that poor people are "waiting for their finances are sound" before marrying, which means they're not marrying. I understand that having a kid may be expensive, but is marriage really that much more expensive than being solo? How about the opportunity to have two incomes combined? Sharing living expenses? Sure, you don't need to be formally married for any of that, but other than tax issues, why would the formal act of marriage make a difference? On the other hand, if you can cohabit, why do you need the formality of marriage? (Things like inheritance and right to visit partners in the hospital would be important enough, I'd think....)
