He Just Could Not Abide By The Invasion Of His Privacy

The attempt by scientists to record the quietude -- that's a word, right? -- in one of the world's quietest places, the remote Alaskan wilderness in the northern reaches of the Gates of the Arctic National Park -- has been foiled by a foe that maybe they should have anticipated: a bear. They got the sounds of nature, then foot crunching, then the sound of a grizzly destroying the recorder. Maybe they can learn something from that. Anyway, the idea of a totally quiet place is really appealing, but having to fight off grizzlies to be there does not. (New York Times)
