It's the eternal problem with gentrification: A neighborhood gets a trendy reputation, the speculators make their move, and the people who made the place cool get priced out. In L.A., a swath of downtown-adjacent industrial wasteland has become very, very trendy as the "Arts District," populated by artists. Now, the artists are being evicted because the property owners want to cash in and raise rents beyond what an artist can afford. So there'll be an Arts District with few or no artists. Should the city step in to stop this or is that just the luck of the draw? (Los Angeles Times)
