What, Grades, Extracurricular Activities, And Desire To Go Aren't Enough?
-
One of the most stressful and difficult parts of applying for college is... well, the financial aid part is rough, but the REAL stresser is the essay portion, because, let's face it, 17 and 18 year olds are not always the most accomplished essayists. And the essay can make or break the application. If you're going to college to be something other than a creative sort -- if you're planning on being a biologist, or surgeon, or anything else that doesn't require an expertise in effective prose other than technical or scientific papers -- does an essay prove anything? I don't even remember what I wrote about, but I remember NOT applying to one school I was interested in attending because the essay requirement was stupid.... (Washington Post)
