So, what ARE the origins of Thanksgiving, anyway? You might remember the myths from school, and you hear some people saying that the holiday is based on, basically, genocide, but what IS the deal? Politifact dug into the story and found... well, it's not clear. It seems to have been an impromptu harvest meal mentioned in passing in a couple of books from the time, and it might be that the native Wampanoag showed up uninvited but the Pilgrims shared the meal with them. It was probably friendly, but probably DIDN'T involve turkey; the menu more likely involved fish stew with cornmeal mush, so let's be thankful that didn't become the tradition. And as for genocide, the disease that killed most of the Wampanoag came from shipwrecked French soldiers years BEFORE the first Thanksgiving, and the Pilgrims came after that and had a good relationship with the natives for about 50 years before things went bad. The more you know.... (Politifact)
