In My Day, We Had To Walk All The Way To The Front Door Before They Carried Us Off
-
The school bus USED to come right to their driveway, but a new driver realized that a) the bridge to their part of the road isn't rated to hold that much weight and b) there's a law that prevents the K-turn the bus had to make to go back to the route, so the parents were told that their kids have to walk a half-mile to the bus stop now. And they sued. And lost. They claimed it's unsafe to walk that far on a road without sidewalks, but the court said the shoulder's plenty wide and... well, look, we all remember that most students had to walk to a bus stop. Or, like me, you had to walk up to a couple of miles, across traffic and through neighborhoods, to get to and from school. It's practically a rite of passage. If I'd been getting door-to-door service, maybe I'd feel upset, too, but, man, how hard is it to walk a half-mile? (Courier News, Bridgewater)
