When The Deck's Stacked Against You And The Rent Is Due

Washington Post business columnist Michelle Singletary explains in this column, for the many people who remain clueless about it and ask the question, why women don't talk about sexual harassment right away. It's simple: Many are afraid they'll lose their jobs, probably because many DO lose their jobs when they complain. Oh, they're not told that it's the reason, but it is. Ask yourself if you'd be prepared to lose your livelihood -- and possibly gain a reputation as being unhireable -- or whether you'd keep quiet and employed. Can you blame someone for not wanting to end their own career? And how many women have stifled their ambitions because they didn't want to ruin their chances of earning a living? (Washington Post)
