You Learn Something New And Useless Every Day

Why science rules: Someone actually did research on what happens when you microwave a hard-boiled egg. And there's a reason they researched this: A lawsuit by a guy who sued a restaurant complaining that he not only got burned but his hearing was damaged when he bit into a reheated hard-boiled egg at a restaurant. The researchers were enlisted to find out whether an exploding hard-boiled egg makes that loud sound. Your answer, after several attempts and oven cleaning, is that no, it doesn't make THAT loud a sound, but they also found out WHY the eggs explode: The yolk gets much, much hotter than the rest, and water pockets in the yolk get so hot that they create steam that makes the egg go blooey. Bottom line: Don't microwave a hard-boiled egg. You knew that, but now you KNOW that. (New York Times)
