Blows To The Head Cause Problems... Shocking, I Know
-
Stephen Peat was a tough guy in the NHL for a few seasons in Washington, but mostly in the minors and junior hockey. Lots of fights, lots of head trauma... and for the past few years, there have been stories about how he's in bad shape, living on the streets and a danger to himself and others . He burned down his family's house a couple of years ago, and his father says he's somewhere on the streets and nearing death. He could be on the same path as Derek Boogaard, who died in 2011 and whose substance abuse may have been connected to CTE. Peat's father thinks so, and the question is whether hockey -- the leagues, the coaches, the sport -- is responsible, just like the same issues arise with the NFL. Are contact sports to blame? Are they safe enough for you to let your kids play? Will they survive in 20 years? (CBC)
