It's Different If You Were Going To Buy The Cereal Anyway
-
One of the most popular school fundraising campaigns is the time-honored Box Tops for Education deal: Parents send in cereal boxtops and General Mills sends money to their designated school. How is that a bad thing? This: Critics note that this just encourages sales of sugar-laden junk food disguised as an educational support program. Another popular campaign, Campbell's Labels for Education, was torpedoed as well, with the company saying it had declined in popularity and the Food Nazis (Center for Science in the Public Interest) celebrating its demise. Here's what I don't understand: If these companies are really being altruistic, why not just cut out the program and donate directly? Because they CAN do that. Tying charity to sales of a commercial product isn't really charity. (Washington Post)
