Yeah, But What Cartoons?
-
We now know more about how Volkswagen rigged tests of its diesel engines to hide the fact that they spewed more pollutants than allowed by law, and it's pretty insane and not just about the software, which we already knew about. No, they also rigged a test that included monkeys breathing diesel fumes while watching cartoons, all in order to win a challenge to the World Health Organization's classification of diesel fumes as carcinogens. They found a "research group" that didn't actually do research but, for a fee, would go out and find scientists who, for a fee, would deliver the desired results. I mean, we KNOW that some scientific studies say what the people paying for them want them to say -- that's why the funding is always noted. It's just incredible that big business leaders can be so reckless and disregarding of human safety that they'd pay to cheat and be allowed to actively harm people. In a just world, Volkswagen wouldn't just have been fined and forced to recall the cars; the entire corporate office would have been thrown in hard-time prison for life and the company handed over to a competitor who isn't tainted.
