Some Things Transcend Nature
-
On the first day of Spring (that was Tuesday, in case you missed it), a couple of frozen treat chains, Dairy Queen and Rita's Water Ice (Rita's Italian Ice outside Philadelphia; Water ice, pronounced "wooder ice," is both a redundancy and what Philadelphians call Italian ice), give away free ice cream cones and cups of Italian ice, respectively. I mention this because in part of the country, Tuesday's weather was miserable -- cold, windy, and a lot of snow coming down -- yet some people, smaller in number than when the weather's nicer but still plenty of them, went to eat free ice cream and ices anyway. Some people say that there is such a thing as "too cold for ice cream," which is why some ice cream stores shut down for the season. I say it is NEVER too cold. Then again, I moved to Los Angeles, so I don't count. You make the call: When IS it too cold for ice cream, ESPECIALLY free ice cream? (Philadelphia Inquirer)
