'Temp' Shouldn't Mean 'Disposable'
-
A woman working as a temp worker at a Toronto bakery got her head scarf tangled in a machine. As it strangled her, another worker was allegedly there... and did nothing, because he didn’t know what to do. He apparently didn't know how to operate the emergency stop buttons (usually, pressing a red button that's labeled "EMERGENCY STOP," but we don't know what the specifics were here). Another co-worker, who trained the woman on the machine on her first day, also didn't know how to stop the machine. By the time others who DID know how to stop it showed up, the woman was dead. And it raises questions on whether businesses adequately train employees who work with heavy machinery on how to safely use them. Wouldn't be too much of an issue for you in radio, but your listeners might have stories about how -- and whether -- they were trained for their jobs. (Toronto Star)
