They'd Better Not Lose All Evidence Of Wayne And Shuster
-
History might be repeating itself, and it's radio and TV people to blame: Back in the '60s and '70s, broadcast companies destroyed or recorded over their old tapes and kinescopes to save space, even when people offered to take the stuff off their hands. It's 2018, and the CBC is insisting on destroying its broadcast archives after they’re digitized, which makes some major and possibly doomed assumptions about digital media. We don't know if digital recordings will degrade, but we know from DVDs and CDs that they don't last forever. Neither do analog masters, but as long as they're kept the right way, they can not only last for a long time, they offer the most pristine video and audio. You have to hope this ends well, but you'd hope that the network would work with the preservationists who have offered to take the recordings off the CBC's hands instead of, as they've done so far, blow them off.
