Nature Is Slowly Getting Its Revenge
-
Panic time!: There's been an explosion in the number of people getting diseases from tick bites in the U.S. There are new tick-borne diseases, and more people are getting them. If you were freaked out by Zika, you're going to see more of that, it appears. The number of tick-borne illness cases on a yearly basis has tripled since 2004. Want some calming news? The number isn't that huge. 96,000 in 2016. Still too many, and still a reason to use repellent and covering up when outside, but even assuming that 96,000 is really just a portion of the actual number -- there are estimates that 300,000 people get Lyme disease every year while only 35,000 are reported -- that's not a big percentage of the public. Still, watch out for yourself. (New York Times)
