Unless They're Made Of Nerf, Don't Call Them 'Soft' Anymore
-
Softballs are not soft. They should have a different name. Anyway, there are two stories from Iowa that illustrate how dangerous softballs can be: one, about a mother who, after her daughter got hit in the face by a line drive, wants it to be mandatory that young softball players wear masks. And then there's the 7-month-old baby who got hit in the head and is in the Mayo Clinic with skull fractures and two brain bleeds; she was with her mom watching her dad play in a rec league game. You could ask whether a 7-month-old belongs on the sidelines of a softball game, or whether mom should have been paying better attention, but, you know, it's not something you expect. Freak accidents happen no matter where you are. (WOI-TV/Des Moines; Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier)
