The man accused of hitting his dog with a baseball bat because the dog ate his Whopper might be sadder than the headline indicates, and not just for the dog: The man is a former Marine suffering from PTSD. He also has a long criminal record that involves both violence against other people (including cops) and animal cruelty. So this guy reached bottom a while ago and has stayed there. Not sure what they can do to help him, or if it's too late, and it isn't a valid excuse for beating a dog with a bat, but it might explain how he got here. (New Bedford Standard-Times)
