What is it about things from one place washing up on shore far, far away that appeals to people? I don't know, but I do remember that when I was a kid, I would stand on the beach in New Jersey and squint into the distance and imagine Europe just over the horizon. I wasn't great at distance estimation. Anyway, I never saw Europe from Asbury Park and I never found a message in a bottle, either, but here's a piece of New Jersey that managed to make it to the other side: A real estate "for sale" sign washed ashore in France, and it was another casualty of Superstorm Sandy. That's a five-and-a-half year trip. It's not unprecedented: A political campaign sign made it from Newfoundland to England in 2007. Again, I'm not sure why there's a romance in the idea of something like that making the trip across the ocean, but there is. (New York Times)
