Nobody Goes There Anymore, It's Too Crowded (RIP Yogi)
-
Humans have a nearly unlimited capacity for ruining good things, and so we have Joshua Tree, California, a sleepy community out in the middle of the desert that used to be a cool, quirky, sparsely-populated town of eccentrics but has now been overrun by tourists seeking the next unusual destination. What used to be a scattered collection of tiny homes and trailers is now being Airbnb'd to death, including "slab lords" renting out slabs for campers, who then come and cause noise and fights and trash and the usual stuff that happens when new people show up unfamiliar with the local customs. It has also driven up housing prices and driven a wedge between factions that oppose short-term rentals and those who are making money from it. Oh, well, at least it's not Yucca Valley. Yet.
