We now know, thanks to a dogged scientist who wondered, why the Leaning Tower of Pisa withstands every earthquake, no matter how intense. Short version: The same loose soil that led to its tipping absorbs the tremors and, combined with the tower's position and weight, keep it in place. Good to know. Not sure WHY we need to know, but there it is. (Washington Post)
