You've heard about how the cost of living in places like the Bay Area has gone up so much that there's no way the service workers needed for places like shops and restaurants can afford to live anywhere near them. So, how are San Francisco restaurants coping? Simple: They make diners do everything themselves. You order at the counter, you seat yourself, you bus your own table, just like a fast food place, but for fine dining, too. You want water? Get it yourself. Wine? Same. Need silverware? It's over there on a counter. Full service is endangered. Would that bother you? (New York Times)
